The care of children globally, and particularly in Ghana, has significantly evolved since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. As the first country to ratify this convention, Ghana demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring children’s rights and protection through its Constitution and various legislative measures.

To further improve the application of relevant laws and enhance existing child welfare systems, the Family-Based Care Alliance (FaBCA), in collaboration with A Family for Every Orphan (AFFEO) and the Judicial Training Institute (JTI), organized a crucial workshop aimed at strengthening judicial best practices for child protection in Ghana.

Purpose and Objectives of the Workshop

Held at the Accra City Hotel (formerly Novotel), the workshop targeted selected Justices of the High Court and provided a platform for discussions on best practices in judicial processes related to child protection and care.

Key objectives of the workshop included:

– Reviewing current laws and policies related to the welfare of orphaned and vulnerable children.

– Raising awareness among judicial practitioners about the importance of legal oversight in child welfare cases.

– Identifying gaps and areas for improvement within the current system.

– Fostering inter-institutional commitment to best practices in child care proceedings.

– Advocating for the establishment of an inter-institutional commission to implement the identified best practices.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the judicial and child welfare sectors. Notable attendees included: His Lordship Justice I.O. Tanko Amadu, Director of JTI and Justice of the Supreme Court, Miss Dorcas Amartey, Deputy Director of JTI, High Court Judges from across the region, Rev. Dr. Comfort Asare, former Director of the Department of Social Welfare, and representatives from the JTI.

These distinguished participants played a vital role in shaping discussions and sharing their expertise on legal frameworks, institutional collaborations, and judicial interventions that can significantly improve child welfare outcomes in Ghana.

A Step Forward for Child Welfare in Ghana

The workshop marked an important milestone in advancing child protection through judicial processes. The event laid the groundwork for a more effective and child-centered legal system in Ghana by strengthening legal oversight, fostering collaboration between institutions, and identifying actionable strategies.

As the country continues its efforts to improve alternative care systems and judicial protections for vulnerable children, initiatives like this workshop are essential steps toward ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment.
